How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?
An introduction to HPHT and CVD, the two principal methods of growing diamonds.
Quick answer
The two principal processes are HPHT, or high pressure, high temperature, and CVD, or chemical vapor deposition. Both use controlled conditions to grow diamond crystals.
HPHT explained
HPHT equipment subjects a carbon source and a diamond seed to high pressure and high temperature. Metal catalysts are commonly involved in the growth process. The crystal can then be prepared for cutting.
CVD explained
CVD grows diamond on a seed plate in a chamber using carbon-containing gas. Energy activates the gas, and diamond builds up on the seed. Growth conditions differ from the HPHT process.
After crystal growth
A grown crystal is not yet a finished jewelry stone. It must be assessed, cut and polished; some material undergoes additional treatment. Ask the seller what the report says about origin and any identified treatment.
Understanding the finished stone
These process names explain production, not a complete judgment of an individual diamond. Read the relevant laboratory information and inspect the finished jewelry. This introductory guide describes industrial processes rather than a home manufacturing method.
